San Carlo Winery

About San Carlo Winery

In the 1965 Fulvio Marcucci and Renata Machetti purchased 13 hectares of land near Tavernelle. To begin with the property was composed entirely of grain crops and woods. A passion for agriculture and a strong belief in the potential of the land and microclimate which was soon to be rewarded, formed the basis of Fulvio and Renata’s decision to invest their resources and energy in the production of wine and oil.

They transformed a part of their property, gradually substituting the grain crops with specialized sangiovese vineyards and olive groves. In 1968 they planted the olive grove and the first vineyard, “Vigna dei Meli”, from wich first Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino SanCarlo were produced in 1974. In 1986 the second vineyard was planted, the “Vigna del Picchio”. In 2000 the third vineyard was planted, the “Vigna della sorgente” and lastly in 2006 the “Vigna del Mago”.

At the moment the SanCarlo estate has 3 hectares of sangiovese vineyards, an olive grove that covers 1 hectare, an other hectare of crops and 8 hectares of woodlands.

A family run winery from the start, the SanCarlo estate has counted on the passion and commitment of three generations thas far: Giancarlo, Fulvio and Renata’ son, has managed the winery since 1999 and since 2007 Gemma has worked side by side with her father Giancarlo. Just like Fulvio and Renata did, today Giancarlo and Gemma carry on the production themselves, every step is personally managed and controlled by them during the entire process.

Il Maghino” has been the nickname in this branch of the Marcucci family for centuries and still is here in Montalcino. If Fulvio is “Maghino” for everyone, to indicate Giancarlo you have to specify that you are talking about “il figliolo del Maghino”, Maghino’s son.

And if you’re looking for Gemma, you have to ask for “la citta del Maghino”, Maghino’s daughter. Fulvio, il Maghino, left us on April 26, 2020 to join his wife Renata who passed away on December 24, 2002.
Giancarlo and Gemma remain at San Carlo, cultivating together both the land and the teachings of Fulvio and Renata.

Vineyards and Cellar Practices

The San Carlo estate is on the south west side of Montalcino. The property is located on a gentle slope at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level. The proximity of the sea, only 40-50 km south west, and the nearby hills that protect our vines from north and northeasterly winds, ensure a particularly favorable climate in this position, characterized by dry summers and the right quantity of rainfall in autumn. These conditions are ideal for ripening grapes.

High density of vines in the vineyards, attentive choice of vine-stocks according to the characteristics of each part of the estate and the use of highly selected clones, not to mention the scrupulous care and attention dedicated to each individual vineyard ensure a low yield of healthy grapes characterized by concentration and high levels of color and tannins.

The San Carlo estate removes bunches in excess when the grapes begin to change color in order to allow the remaining bunches to ripen perfectly. The harvest is done by hand and the grapes are placed in small crates. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats in a temperature controlled environment.

In order to guarantee the best and most delicate extraction of polyphenolic fraction, the wine is pumped over and the cap formed by the skins is broken on a daily basis during fermentation. The malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in the period following the alcoholic fermentation.
