Visiting Siena

A Crown Jewel of Tuscany

Siena is 45 minutes north of Montalcino and is one of the largest centers for shopping in the rural areas of Tuscany.  You will find ample restaurants, shops, and art stores in Siena with many pictures depicting the famous Paleo race which runs twice each summer.

Make sure you wear comfortable shoes since the town center requires an uphill walk through local shops and restaurants.

If you are driving to Siena, make sure you park in the public parking lots and the best chance to fin parking will be at Il Campo. You can use this link to Google Maps to find the best parking spot in Siena.

The Paleo race

The Palio is run to celebrate the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary near the old houses that belonged to Provenzano Salvani. The holy apparition was therefore called “Madonna di Provenzano” in whose honor the very first Palio was run on August 16, 1656.  The race is held twice each year, on 2 July and 16 August each year.  The main piazza is transformed in the summer to a horse racing track as shown in the photo above.

Food in Siena

Does ice cream count? You will find all the traditional Tuscan dishes in Siena but you will also find some of the best gelato in the region.  There are numerous shops to choose from so save some room and try a few of them including Nutella flavored gelato.
