At Montosoli both Tamanti accounts appear side by side, and the register itself seems to record land moving between them. Gaetano Tamanti di Francesco held the larger share. The brothers Ermenegildo and Antonio Tamanti di Filandro, from another branch of the family, held a smaller one. On one parcel, a clerk struck out the brothers’ names and wrote in Gaetano’s.
Gaetano’s holding
In section B′, Montosoli, Gaetano held parcels 11–29, 39–44 and 49–50, about 65 hectares (Tavole indicative, Tomo II p. 97, p. 98, p. 99). The entries include a farmhouse with vines, olives and fruit trees around it, a mixed farm of the kind found across the Montalcino hills. After San Polo, it was the second-largest of his rural holdings.
The brothers’ holding
Ermenegildo and Antonio held parcels 51–56 and 59–61, about 16 hectares of arable land, pasture and oak wood (Tomo II p. 99, p. 100). No farmhouse is recorded among these parcels.
Parcel 39: a name crossed out
At parcel 39 the survey reports an alteration: the names of Ermenegildo and Antonio are struck through, and Gaetano’s is written in their place. Here the two Tamanti accounts meet on a single parcel. It could record a sale, an exchange, an inheritance or simply a clerk correcting a mistake. The Campione ledgers for the two accounts (page 1242 for the brothers, page 1258 for Gaetano) and the transfer entries (volture) should say which, and when. Until then, parcel 39 is a promising lead rather than evidence of a transaction.
The two accounts belong to different branches of the family: the sons of Filandro and the son of Dr Francesco. Both branches appear in Carle’s published genealogy (Carle, La patria locale, 1996, p. 292).
Santi neighbours
Petronilla Canali ne’ Santi, Clemente Santi’s mother, also held about 10 hectares in the section, at parcels listed as 47–48 and 57–68, with a farmhouse, threshing floor, oak wood and vines (Tomo II p. 99, p. 100). As listed, her range 57–68 overlaps the brothers’ parcels 59–61, so that entry needs checking against the register. Either way, hers is a separate Santi account. See the Biondi-Santi connection.
