Castel Giocondo was one of the brothers’ more substantial holdings. In the survey of about 1820, Ermenegildo and Antonio Tamanti di Filandro held about 93 hectares in the Castel Giocondo section, the largest single measured area in their account.
The 1820 record
The owner table for section D′′, Castel Giocondo, lists the brothers’ parcels as 12–27 (Tavole indicative, Tomo III p. 247, p. 248). The entries include a farmhouse with a threshing floor, woods, and land planted with vines and olives. That is consistent with a working farm with a good share of woodland. The hectare figure is Brian Pasch’s approximate total for the section, converted from square braccia, not a measurement of the farm.
No name for the farm has been found, nor any earlier or later Tamanti record for this section. The Castel Giocondo land does not appear among the Tamanti poderi of 1692 or the Tamanti entries of the 1832 SS. Salvatore tithe register, though both lists cover only part of the family’s property.
Castel Giocondo today
Castel Giocondo is now an estate of the Frescobaldi family (Frescobaldi, “Tenuta CastelGiocondo”). The shared name is not evidence of shared land. The 93 hectares recorded under the Tamanti brothers cannot be equated with any part of the modern estate without overlaying the historic cadastral map on today’s boundaries and tracing the ownership in between. For now, all that can be said is that the Tamanti owned land in this district in about 1820.
What is still open
- The name of the farm and the location of its farmhouse.
- When and how the brothers acquired it, and when it left the family. Their ledger account (Campione page 1242) and its transfer entries should answer both.
