Abbadia Ardenga is one of the quieter entries in the Tamanti land records. In the survey of about 1820, the brothers Ermenegildo and Antonio Tamanti di Filandro held about 26 hectares in section Z, Abbadia Ardenga. Their parcels were fields, pasture and woodland, and no building is recorded.
The 1820 record
The owner table for the section lists five parcels under the brothers’ names: 123–125 and 140–141 (Tavole indicative, Tomo II p. 73, p. 74). They are described as arable land with oaks, pasture and woods. No farmhouse, threshing floor or other building is recorded among them.
The area is Brian Pasch’s approximate total for the section, converted from square braccia at about 0.34 m² each.
Part of a larger account
Abbadia Ardenga was a small part of a much larger holding. The same joint account (Campione page 1242) covered nine countryside sections and houses in town. Its largest blocks were the 98-parcel estate at Il Casato, almost the whole of Romitorio, a large block at Pelagrilli and about 93 hectares at Castel Giocondo. Beside those, the 26 hectares here look like an outlying piece of land rather than a centre of the family’s farming.
What is not known
No farm name for these parcels has been found. Abbadia Ardenga does not appear among the Tamanti poderi of 1692 or the Tamanti entries in the 1832 tithe register of SS. Salvatore. Nothing yet shows when the brothers acquired the land or what became of it. Their ledger account (Campione page 1242) is the place to look.
